SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police say a 19-year-old woman was drunk when she struck and killed a pedestrian on the shoulder of Interstate 95 in Springfield.

Carol Rood-Johnson of Woodbridge has been charged with driving under the influence, and police say additional charges are pending.

Police say Rood-Johnson's sport-utility vehicle struck a man early Saturday morning as he stood next to his vehicle on the shoulder of northbound I-95. The man died at the scene.

The SUV was later found in Maryland later Saturday morning, and the northbound lanes were closed for several hours.

The state medical examiner's office is working to identify the victim.
