The White House condemned "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attack Monday at a hospital in southwest Pakistan that killed more than five dozen people and wounded at least 100 more.

"That this attack occurred at a hospital and appeared to target a gathering of lawyers mourning the death of a respected colleague makes it all the more heinous," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement.

The suspected suicide bombing took place moments after a group of lawyers brought the body of a colleague, the president of the Balochistan Bar Association, to the hospital after unknown assailants shot and killed him he earlier in the morning, according to a BBC report. The Taliban faction, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

"Our hearts go out to the families and other loved ones of the more than 60 killed, and we wish a speedy recovery to the dozens more injured," he continued.

The United States, Earnest said, remains committed to its "counterterrorism partnership" with Pakistan, and "we remain resolute in joining with the people of Pakistan in confronting terrorism in Pakistan and across the region."
