SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — Bulgaria has awarded Westinghouse Electric Co. a contract to study the feasibility of installing an additional reactor at the only nuclear plant in the Balkan country, which relies on Russia for its energy supplies.

Under Monday's deal, Westinghouse will conduct the study at the Kozloduy nuclear plant by March to determine which of two proposed reactor designs to adopt. Bulgaria's Energy Minister Delyan Dobrev estimated the cost at 1 million euro ($1.25 million).

The decision came months after Bulgaria scrapped plans to build a second 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant on the Danube River with the Russian company Atomstroyexport.

The Kozloduy plant currently has two 1,000-megawatt units of the Russian VVER type in operation.
