An armed intruder, spouting opposition to social conservatism, walked into the Washington headquarters of the Family Research Council on Wednesday and shot a security guard before the wounded guard and others wrestled him to the floor and subdued him until police arrived, authorities said. They identified the suspect as Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, of Herndon, who has a master’s degree from George Mason University’s College of Education and Human Development. Corkins was being held late Wednesday night on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. The guard, identified by the Family Research Council as Leo Johnson, was shot in the arm before or during the incident in the lobby, D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said. She credited Johnson with preventing a tragedy by stopping the man, who was carrying a 9mm handgun, from reaching the upstairs offices in the group’s six-story building at Eighth and G streets NW. [...] Two law enforcement officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said the gunman entered the lobby carrying a satchel, with a bag from a Chick-fil-A restaurant inside. The Atlanta-based fast-food chain has been embroiled in controversy in recent weeks after its president spoke out against same-sex marriage. The Family Research Council also opposes such unions.
What occurred yesterday was clearly an act of domestic terrorism. Thankfully, social conservatives aren't using this act of domestic terrorism to attempt to discredit their opponents. "Same-Sex Marriage Advocates Not To Blame for FRC Shooting," writes Matthew Schmitz at the website of First Things.
the only person who holds the blame for today’s shooting, whatever its motivation, is the shooter himself. No idea or cause, however noble, is immune from excess. John Brown killed in the name of freedom. George Tiller’s murderer killed him, with unequalled perversity, in the name of life. And it seems increasingly likely that the FRC shooter shot a man in the name of tolerance.

I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.
I just want to start at the top to let you know that today at 1:18 p.m. Eastern Time, the President was notified of the shooting at the Family Research Council headquarters in Washington D.C., by his Homeland Security Advisor, John Brennan. I spoke to the President following his being briefed by Mr. Brennan on this and the President expressed his concern for the individual injured in the shooting and his strong belief that this type of violence has no place in our society.
As you know, there is an ongoing investigation so there is not much more I can say about this specific incident. For additional questions, I would refer you, of course, to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and to the FBI.
