Bill Kristol appeared on ABC's This Week Sunday and said he is "finished" with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. At a political event in Iowa over the weekend, the New York businessman had criticized senator John McCain's record on veterans' issues and dismissed the Arizona Republican's status as a war hero because McCain had been captured by the Viet Cong and held in a prisoner camp for several years.
“He’s not a war hero,” Trump had said. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
"He was a controversial character who said some useful things, I think, and brought some people into the Republican tent, but he jumped the shark yesterday," Kristol told guest host Martha Raddatz. "He's dead to me." The boss pointed out that Trump's comments were disrespectful to McCain as well as to all veterans, particularly those who are or have been prisoners of war.
"I'm finished with Donald Trump," Kristol added. Watch the video below:
McCain's six years as a prisoner of war included frequent beatings, particularly after the Viet Cong discovered McCain's father was a commander in the U.S. Navy. The 2008 GOP nominee for president remains unable to lift his arms above his head due to the abuse and torture he experienced.
