The wonderfully corrosive Facebook page “Liberal Wackadoodles” shared a meme of Georgia’s gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, claiming that she said “who needs agriculture when you can just get food at the store.”
Wackadoodles, indeed.
Let’s dispel the "is it true?!1?" inquiry up front and clearly for some of our more obtuse readers: TWS Fact Check could find no evidence of Stacey Abrams suggesting such a thing.
The meme, however, attempts to feed off of some Mandela Effect confusion of related events. Abrams took on some backlash for her suggestion that “I want to create a lot of different jobs because people shouldn’t have to go into agriculture or hospitality to make a living in Georgia.”
The candidate later clarified in (where else?) a tweet that her “point is that we must continue to diversify our economy and raise wages across the board.”
To be clear, my point is that we must continue to diversify our economy and raise wages across the board. Agriculture and hospitality are vital sectors of our economy in Georgia - but we can do more and lead in new sectors as well. https://t.co/3eiv8c3QHr

Perhaps some of the 15,000 folks who shared the false quote remembered hearing something about “agriculture ... Stacey Abrams ... gaffe” but didn’t bother to examine the question more closely. What a shame.
