An anti-Donald Trump super PAC is filing an immigration complaint against Melania Trump. According to a press release sent out Monday morning:
The Democratic Coalition Against Trump announced today that it is filing paperwork requesting an immediate and thorough investigation by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to determine whether Melania Trump, wife of the Republican nominee for President of the United States, violated our nation's immigration laws. The move comes after numerous media stories have called into question whether Mrs. Trump entered the U.S. legally and whether she illegally held employment while in the U.S. on a visa for non-working visitors.
This is a rather odd complaint for a Democratic super PAC to make. Hillary Clinton, after all, is running a presidential campaign that is unprecedented in its permissive attitude towards illegal immigration. Clinton's stance is essentially that if somebody somehow finds their way into the United States, they can stay here indefinitely. Indeed, so contemptuous of the nation's immigration laws is the Clinton campaign that an illegal immigrant stood on stage as an honored guest during the Democratic convention in Philadelphia last month.
In an email, a spokesman for the Democratic Coalition Against Trump says it takes no position on immigration, but is instead simply seeking "the information we deserve. From his secret tax returns to his wife's immigration status, Trump sets a double standard: one for himself and another for everyone else." That may be true, but it also seems like a "double standard" to only call for the enforcement of immigration laws against one person—a person, not coincidentally, who happens to be a political opponent.
