The Democratic National Committee is highlighting this exchange on MSNBC:
SCARBOROUGH: What was [Sharron Angle's] exact quote...? MATTHEWS: She said she understands why people think of and resort to 2nd Amendment solutions to the Democrats in Congress they don't like. SCARBOROUGH: ... How did she try to walk that back? MATTHEWS: Well, there isn't any walking back. She didn't try. She said the 2nd Amendment should be used to to fight what they see as tyranny in Washington...
Here's Angle's exact quote:
“Our Founding Fathers, they put that Second Amendment in there for a good reason, and that was for the people to protect themselves against a tyrannical government,” Angle told conservative talk show host Lars Larson in January. “In fact, Thomas Jefferson said it’s good for a country to have a revolution every 20 years. I hope that’s not where we’re going, but you know, if this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies.”
But contrary to Matthews' claim, Angle did walk back that statement. The Las Vegas Sun reported on her interview last week with Jon Ralston:
Only once did she flatly admit her pre-primary language was too strong, when asked to explain her comments that the citizenry will resort to “Second Amendment remedies” — referring to the right to bear arms — if conservatives didn’t win this election. “I admit it was a little strong to say,” she said. “That’s why I changed my rhetoric to ‘defeat Harry Reid.’ ”
Democrats have plenty to work with when attacking Angle's actual beliefs and statements, so why do they feel the need to misrepresent her record?
