Those hoping to get around town this long weekend should start planning now.

The Metro system is starting on major track work Friday night that will last through Monday. Meanwhile, some downtown D.C. roads and sidewalks will be closed for the BET Honors awards ceremony.

The Foggy Bottom Metro station will be closed, so anyone passing through will need to take a free shuttle bus to cover the gap between Farragut West and Rosslyn.

Some riders can avoid the mess by taking the Yellow Line instead into Virginia. But those making the trek should add about 40 minutes to their travel plans — and dress warmly for the outdoor waits for shuttle buses. The transit agency also plans to run trains on a single track in several spots.

Here’s a primer on what to avoid:

Full Metro closures

  • Orange, Blue lines: Foggy Bottom station will be closed, with free shuttle buses running between Rosslyn and Farragut West.  The buses will run between Rosslyn (N. Moore St.), Foggy Bottom-GWU (23rd St., northbound, south of I St., N.W., and 23rd and I St., N.W., southbound) and Farragut West (17th and 18th and I St., N.W.) stations.

Single-tracking

  • Orange Line: Between West Falls Church-VT/UVA and East Falls Church stations for Dulles Rail construction
  • Blue Line: Between the Van Dorn Street and Braddock Road stations for construction related to the Wilson Bridge project
  • Red Line:
Between Friendship Heights and Van Ness-UDC to fix leaky tunnels and add bumpy tiles to the Tenleytown platform
