Three golfers from the Washington area have qualified for match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur, the world’s most prestigious tournament for players 17-and-under.

Rockville’s Ben Warnquist (70-68 – 138), Haymarket’s Andrew Lister (73-67 –140) and Burtonsville’s Denny McCarthy (71-74 – 145) advanced comfortably to the round of 64 Wednesday at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Mich.

The Maryland-bound Warnquist, a senior this fall at DeMatha, tied for seventh place in the qualifying stage, four strokes behind medalist Curtis Thompson (68-66 – 134) of Coral Gables, Fla.

Defending champion Jordan Speith (67-68 – 135) of Dallas, Tex., was a stroke back along with 15-year-old Gavin Hall (73-62 – 135) of Pittsford, N.Y., who shot a tournament-record with his 10-under-par score in the second round. The round topped the previous best, a 64, six years ago by former Chantilly star Joe Monte.
