Virginia Del. Barbara Comstock, a rising Republican star in the state, has been tapped to speak at the GOP convention later this month in Tampa, she announced Tuesday.

Comstock, who co-chairs presidential contender Mitt Romney's Virginia campaign, will also serve as a deputy permanent co-chairman at the 2012 convention.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to speak at the 2012 Republican National Convention and serve as a convention co-chairman," Comstock said in statement. "Next week, when we nominate the next president and vice-president of the United States, all Virginians and all Americans will hear from the team who will get the country back on the path to prosperity."

Comstock is scheduled to speak Monday, the convention's opening day, at 2 p.m.

Elected in 2009, the McLean resident has quickly gained traction in Republican circles both in Richmond and nationally. She was one of 50 lawmakers nationwide recruited for the "Emerging Political Leaders" program in 2010 through the State Legislative Leaders Foundation and the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.

Comstock is also an ally of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and has served on the governor's Economic Development and Job Creation Commission.

She previously served as a senior aide to Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., and worked for the Justice Department before running for office.
