After losing for the first time in tournament history last summer, the Virginia girls resumed their dominance of the Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls’ Team Matches, Friday-Sunday at Turf Valley, winning decisively, 8.5-3.5, in the 12th annual event.

Local players who helped Virginia regain the Poindexter Cup and improve to 10-1-1 in the series were Alex Austin (Burke), who defeated Kushboo Thiagaraj (Rockville) in Sunday singles, 3 and 2, and Sara Stanley (Centreville), who edged Caroline Quamme (Potomac), 2 and 1.

Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake) played a big role for Virginia, rolling to a 5 and 4 victory over Diana Brown (Potomac) in singles, and teaming with Shabril Brewer (Herndon) for a 4 and 3 four-ball victory Saturday over Quamme and Elizabeth Silbernagal (Fallston).

Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield) and Paige Reese (South Hill) also had successful weekends. Anderson defeated Bryana Nguyen (Columbia) 1 up and Reese beat Clare Connolly (Chevy Chase) 3 and 2. Anderson and Reese teamed up Saturday to edge Nguyen and Karishma Thiagaraj, 1 up.

Karishma Thiagaraj, the reigning Maryland Junior Girls champion, handed the reigning VSGA Junior Girls champ, Amanda Steinhagen (Oak Hill), 1 up. Steinhagen was also coming off a victory in the Virginia Women’s Amateur, which she wrapped up on Friday at the Glenmore Club in Keswick.
