Donald Trump sent national security experts and others into a frenzy last month when TV host Joe Scarborough relayed a story he had heard that made the GOP nominee sound eager to use nuclear weapons.

In the story, which the campaign has denied, Trump reportedly asked what the point of having nuclear weapons was if the U.S. won't use them.

He explains that while the nominee's comments are alarming at first blush, the thorny and sometimes contradictory nature of nuclear weapons and deterrence show that Trump may actually have a point.
