Don't look for laughs or media mockery in this video, Jon Stewart opened the Daily Show last night with a serious monologue on the Arizona tragedy and its implications for our country.

"It's hard to know what to say," said Stewart seriously, "Obviously these events this weekend in Arizona weigh heavily, sadly its a feeling that this country has experienced way too often, unfortunately for our show the closer we have gotten towards discussing and dealing with current events the harder it becomes in situations when reality is truly sad. I can give you a compilation of the days news excesses but it doesn't seem appropriate.

Stewart continued: "As I watch the political pundit world, many are reflecting and grieving trying to figure things out but its definitely true that others are working feverishly to find the tidbit or two that will exonerate their side from blame or implicate the other, and watching this is predictable as it is dispiriting."

"Did this political rhetoric cause this?" Stewart asked, "I have no f#$%ing idea."

 Stewart frequently insists that he is not a member of the media or the cable punditry. After watching this segment, however, I think its harder to make that case.
