The man who was killed in a fiery crash that also injured a Fairfax County police officer has been identified.

Fairfax County police said that the deceased was 52-year-old Jeffrey M. Woods of Alexandria.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Monday, Woods was driving a 2006 Infiniti westbound on Franconia Road, approaching the intersection with Gum Street. The Infiniti suddenly veered left and collided head-on with a police cruiser that was traveling on Franconia Road in the opposite direction, police said.

The Infiniti caught fire, and Woods was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was trapped inside his cruiser, and he was extricated and taken to a hospital with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.

Police are not releasing the name of the officer, who is 30 years old and has worked at the Fairfax County Police Department for seven years.
