RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police are stepping up enforcement on interstate highways as college students return to campus.

According to the state police, troopers will saturate Interstates 81, 95 and 64 Saturday as part of the "Operation Air, Land and Speed" traffic enforcement campaign.

Virginia's interstates traditionally see a significant increase in traffic on the Saturday before classes start at colleges and universities across the East Coast. That's why Aug. 18 was selected for the traffic safety campaign.

Along with the usual safety tips about wearing seat belts and not speeding, state police are advising those heading back to campus to carefully pack their vehicles so that nothing jars loose or obscures their vision.
