UPDATE, 1:40 p.m.: Police have identified the man as James T. Clemons, of the 400 block of Russell Avenue in Gaithersburg.

Original post, 10:58 a.m.: An 81-year-old man was killed Friday morning while crossing train tracks to catch a MARC train in Gaithersburg.

The man was trying to cross the tracks to reach the platform when he was struck by a commuter train shortly before 8 a.m., said Cpl. Dan Friz, a Montgomery County police spokesman.

The man, a Gaithersburg resident whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident tied up traffic and rail service near the train station, located at 5 South Summit Ave., for about two hours. All roads and tracks re-opened by about 10:30 a.m., Friz said.
