UPDATE, 12:10 p.m.: Takoma Park Police Chief Ronald Ricucci said the suspect was killed by police. A Prince George's County police officer was grazed in the leg. One hostage was pistol-whipped and another received treatment for shock.

The suspect was carrying bomb-like items that turned out to be plastic foam, authorities said at a news conference.

Ricucci said he didn't know how many shots were fired in the exchange and it's possible the police officer was hit by friendly fire.

The suspect's name wasn't released because his next of kin hadn't been notified.

Six people were in the bank at the time of the incident, Ricucci said.

UPDATE, 11:30 a.m.: A man who robbed a bank in Langley Park and tried to take a woman hostage was shot by police after apparently slipping on ice Friday morning. A police officer also was hit by gunfire.

A Prince George's County police officer and a civilian were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds, according to Prince George's County fire and emergency services. Spokesman Mark Brady said in a statement that the officer's injuries are not life-threatening. No information was available about the civilian's injuries.

Video from Fox 5 and WUSA 9 shows a man directing a woman out of the bank, with what appears to be a gun at her head. The man then trips over snow and ice, and the woman escapes as police shoot at the man.

The robbery occurred at about 9:30 a.m. at the Capital One bank in the 1100 block of University Boulevard.

Takoma Park, Prince George's County and Montgomery County police responded to the incident.
