A broken water main flooded the intersection of 18 and U streets Tuesday afternoon, closing streets and causing some damage to buildings.
According to Alan Heymann, director of public affairs for the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority, scheduled valve replacement work was done Monday night and the valve malfunctioned.
“The repair failed, so we’re in the process of fixing it,” he said.
Heymann said the estimated repair time is four to six hours, during which nearby residents should expect to have their water turned off. The main burst at around 4:30 p.m., and by 6 p.m., the water had stopped flowing and one lane of traffic in each direction had opened.
D.C. Fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said the water flooded some basements, causing some damage. Officials were still assessing damage as of early Tuesday evening.
The D.C. Water and Sewer Authority ask anyone with concerns about damage from the incident to call 202-612-3400.
