Republican nominee Donald Trump met with Gold Star families in Florida on Wednesday after receiving poor coverage when Khizr Khan chided him at the Democratic convention last week for his views about Muslim immigration.

Approximately 10 family members who lost loved ones serving in Iraq and Afghanistan joined Trump and Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn for the event during his trip to the Sunshine State.

Karen Vaughn, the mother of a fallen Navy SEAL and speaker at the Republican convention, organized the meeting.

"It was really a chance to tell our stories, but also talk about problems with the rules of engagement (for troops in war zones) and the failed policies of the current administration," Vaughn told Military Times. "I walked out feeling like I understood where his heart is, regardless of the comments that he made that may seem insensitive to some."

The Gold Star mother said she hasn't taken issue with Trump's comments because it's not her actions Trump may have offended, but her son's.

"As a Gold Star mother, I don't expect anything," she said. "My son is the one who gave his life, not me," Vaughn added.
