DNA evidence leads to guilty plea in 2008 bank heist

A 40-year-old District man pleaded guilty Thursday to a 2008 bank robbery after DNA evidence linked him to the crime.

Four years ago Tony Wilkerson robbed an M&T Bank on the 6400 block of Georgia Avenue NW, but left behind his note demanding money, federal prosecutors in D.C. said.

A bank security guard gave chase, but lost site of Wilkerson. In a nearby yard, the guard found a gray sweatshirt and blue baseball hat that had been discarded by the robber.

DNA evidence was taken from the demand note and a toy recovered with the robbery clothing, prosecutors said.

Wilkerson was arrested in May in North Carolina.
