Body found inside car at MVA
A man's body was found inside a vehicle at the parking lot of the Motor Vehicle Administration in Beltsville, police said.
Shortly before 8:30 a.m. Monday, a witness told a Maryland state trooper at the MVA that he believed there was something wrong with his friend, who was in a Volkswagen Passat. Kevin Lee Francis, 36, showed no obvious signs of trauma, police said, and his body was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
State police are continuing to investigate the incident.
Shooting on first day of school
A student was shot on the morning of the first day of classes for Baltimore County schools, and officials said another student is in custody.
The incident happened at about 10:45 a.m. Monday in the Perry Hall High School cafeteria. The 17-year-old boy who was shot was flown to a trauma center in serious condition.
Police apprehended a 15-year-old boy. Police believe he acted alone and did not target the victim.
Several other students suffered minor nonshooting injuries, officials said.
Pedestrian drinking before death, police say
A pedestrian died after he was struck by an SUV while crossing Jefferson Davis Highway in Woodbridge, police said.
At about 8:25 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the crash on the 13700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway. According to an investigation, 34-year-old Noel Antonio Mejia Ayala was crossing the road and stepped into the path of a 2004 Ford Expedition. Mejia, of Woodbridge, was taken to a hospital where he died later that evening.
Police believe alcohol was a factor for the victim, who was crossing the road outside of a crosswalk. The driver, a 40-year-old District man, stayed at the scene and was the SUV's only occupant.
