2 drown in Upper Marlboro pool
A 12-year-old boy and his uncle drowned in their neighbor's pool Thursday, Prince George's County authorities said. Emergency crews arrived at a home on the 9200 block of Fairhaven Avenue at about 2:30 p.m. They found Najee Clark and his uncle, David Massey, 59, in the pool. Clark and Massey were taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon and died later Thursday at the hospital. WTOP reported that the uncle apparently found the teen underwater in the pool and jumped in to try to help him before drowning himself.
Hearing Friday for man accused of aiding terrorist group
Zachary Adam Chesser, the 20-year-old Fairfax man accused of aiding the Somalian terrorist organization al-Shabaab, remains in jail and faces a detention hearing Friday. Federal public defenders Brian Mizer and Stefan Nachmanoff were appointed to represent Chesser on Thursday. Prosecutors say Chesser tried twice to travel to Somalia to join al-Shabaab as a freedom fighter. Chesser is also known for posting an online warning that the creators of "South Park" risked death because they mocked the prophet Muhammad.
Man sentenced in carjacking of Corker's daughter
Dewalden Connor was sentenced to two years in prison for his role the December carjacking of U.S. Sen. Bob Corker's adult daughter. Authorities say Connor distracted Julia Corker, 22, while she was in her parked vehicle near the Verizon Center. A second man then opened the door, demanded she leave the vehicle, then grabbed her throat and shoved her to the ground. The other man, Steven Alston, was sentenced Tuesday to nine years in prison.
Hundreds cited for HOV-lane violations
Virginia and Maryland police issued 713 high-occupancy vehicle lanes violations in an enforcement effort around the D.C. area Wednesday. The crackdown yielded more than 1,100 citations and arrests during morning and evening commutes. Drivers were cited for reckless driving, speeding and other offenses.
