The Washington Teachers' Union is establishing a scholarship for D.C. Public Schools students in honor of a school board member who died last week.

Union President Nathan Saunders announced Thursday that the $1,000 "Washington Teachers Union-William Lockridge Scholarship" will be presented to a college-bound senior at each of H.D. Woodson Senior High, Ballou Senior High and Anacostia Senior High schools in June 2011.

William Lockridge was 63 when he died last week after suffering from a stroke in his Southeast home on Jan. 7. Lockridge was elected to the board in 1998, when it was called the D.C. Board of Education. He was the former president of the the Ward 8 Democrats and active with the D.C. Democratic State Committee.

"He had the best intentions for teachers and residents of the District of Columbia," Saunders said. "His sincerity, dedication and commitment were inspiring."
