As Democrats at the national level accuse Republicans of racism, a Louisiana teachers union is charging the Lousiana Black Alliance for Education Opportunity — a school choice group — of supporting the racist Ku Klux Klan.

“LaBAEO supports pro KKK curriculum via vouchers,” the Louisiana Federation of Teachers tweeted. The union also said that the group is “delusional [because they are] a black special interest group supporting curriculum that teaches the KKK was good. YOU do that! It’s nuts.”

Kevin Chavous, former chairman of the BAEO, accused the union of “race-baiting” in his response. “We fight to overcome the institutional bigotry that has sentenced thousands of black children across the country to a substandard education,” Chavous said, according to the Heritage Foundation. “It’s a sad day when an organization like the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, which says it cares about kids, is among the organizations using degrading, race-baiting tactics to demean the very people who are doing their best to give kids hope.

The union was apparently referring to BAEO’s support of the law that Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-La., signed which gives school choice vouchers to low-income families who would otherwise have to send their children to failing schools, allowing them instead to send their children to private schools.

“This is a great day for low-income children in Louisiana, whose parents will finally have the opportunity to give them the chance at an amazing education that they deserve,” Chavous, who chaired the American Federation for Children when the law was passed, said at the time.

Liberal critics say the law, which passed with broad bipartisan support, exposes students to faulty information due to lack of state control over the curricula at the schools where students may take their vouchers.
