No surprise from Nationals Park as the Nats get ready to host the Atlanta Braves in a rare 12:35 p.m. start this afternoon. Rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg has been placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 22. The 21-year-old, of course, was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday thanks to shoulder soreness. An MRI and X-rays found no structural damage. But the team is being extra cautious with their prized young pitcher. He is 5-2 with a 2.32 ERA in nine big-league starts. But there are no plans to end Strasburg’s season early. He could begin playing catch as soon as Saturday on the way to a normal bullpen session sometime next week. He would be eligible to come off the disabled list on August 7.
Meanwhile, left-handed pitcher Scott Olsen makes his first start since going on the disabled list with shoulder soreness on May 22. He was off to a good start at 2-2 with a 3.77 ERA. In six minor-league rehab starts Olsen was 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA. Here are today’s lineups.
