The Wizards are in no rush to fill their final two roster spots. Coach Randy Wittman said keeping them open provides flexibility and could help facilitate a trade if one arises.
But two favorites on last year's roster, Roger Mason Jr. and James Singleton, won't be possibilities. Both likely are headed for more lucrative opportunities than they might have found in Washington.
After averaging 5.5 points a game in his second spell with his hometown club -- including 9.7 points and nearly 42 percent shooting from 3-point range in April -- Mason has joined another rebuilding franchise, the New Orleans Hornets.
Singleton, a hardworking reserve forward, averaged 8.2 points and 6.8 rebounds in 12 games last year but declined an offer to stay with Washington, according to his agent, Andy Miller. After a similar stint with the Wizards in 2010, Singleton found a better contract in China and could opt for the same route this year.
Two players on the Wizards' radar are former Philadelphia guard Jodie Meeks and former Minnesota forward Anthony Tolliver, according to reports.
