It's drizzling in the District, but the suburban schools are once again bracing for snow. The cancellations have this reporter confused, having attended a Midwest university that regularly faced -30 degree blizzards and only once in four years canceled classes, likely because freshmen needed to be dug out of the snow. Some people grow later than others.

District
UPDATE: All DCPS athletic events are cancelled. All evening programming, including STAY schools, are cancelled. The College Readiness Community Meeting scheduled this evening at Eastern SHS is postponed until a later date. We are encouraging parents who use after-care to pick up their children at the normal school day dismissal time (as opposed to the end of the after-care program). Staff will still be available to supervise students who cannot be picked up, but, to ensure all students and staff can get home safely, we encourage all parents to pick up their children at the end of the regular school day. Stay tuned to local news media and the DCPS website for additional updates throughout the day and evening relative to plans for tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011. DC Government and DC Public Schools will open on time today. Periodic updates will be provided throughout the day. The Department of Public Works and the Department of Transportation had approximately 100 plow truck outs out overnight treating the main streets. Additional trucks will be deployed this morning to continue the work.
Montgomery County
Montgomery County Public Schools are closed today (Wed. January 26) due to emergency weather conditions. All school and community activities in school buildings also are canceled. All administrative offices are open. Day care programs in school buildings will remain open as scheduled.
Prince George's County
Wednesday, January 26, 2011, 4:47am - Code Blue –SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED. Central Offices will open two hours late. All 12-month personnel are expected to report. A Liberal Leave policy will be in effect for non-emergency personnel.
Fairfax County
All Fairfax County public schools will be closed today, January 26, 2011. Offices are open with an unscheduled leave policy in effect. The following activities in schools and on school grounds are canceled:· extracurricular activities· interscholastic contests· team practices· field trips· middle school after-school programs · professional learning and training courses· all adult and community education classes· recreation programs and community use School Age Child Care (SACC) centers are closed. Weather emergency personnel are to report to work.
Arlington County
At this time there are no changes in the schools’ regular opening and closing schedules. If a decision is made to close, delay or dismiss schools, we will immediately post decisions on this line (1-866-322-4277).
Alexandria City
Schools are open, the front desk confirms.
Prince William County
Today, Wednesday, January 26, all Prince William County Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather. Code Red for employees.
Loudoun County
Loudoun County Public Schools are closed today because of the weather. All 12-month employees have an extra hour to arrive at work before having to use leave.
