The Senate Friday evening rejected a currency enforcement amendment to a "fast track" trade bill that some feared would have sunk the legislation.
The measure, sponsored by Sens. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., would hold accountable any trade-pact country that is deemed to be manipulating its currency.
The amendment failed by a vote of 48-51.
The Senate agreed by a vote of 70-29 to approve an amendment sponsored by Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., that would address currency manipulation but not mandate enforcement against countries that engage in the practice.
