Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey is trailing his Democratic challenger in his bid for re-election, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

Katie McGinty has a 4-point lead, 45-41, according to the latest Monmouth poll. After Toomey, 6 percent support libertarian nominee Edward Clifford, and 8 percent are undecided.

Toomey holds a 41-29 lead with independents, but McGinty is doing slightly better with Democrats than he is with Republicans. The former chief of staff to Gov. Tom Wolf is backed by 85 percent of Democrats, and Toomey wins 81 percent of Republicans.

The Pennsylvania Republican is likely being hurt by GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, who trails former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by 8 points in the new Monmouth poll, 48-40.

Toomey's favorability ratings are split, as 32 percent viewing him favorably and 30 percent see him unfavorably. While McGinty is viewed favorably by those who have heard about her, a whopping 56 percent don't hold an opinion about her.

According to the RealClearPolitics average, Toomey is still in striking distance, as McGinty holds a 1.3-point advantage with just over two months to go until election day.
