Maryland transportation officials next week will start a $1 million resurfacing project in downtown Bethesda.

All lanes of Old Georgetown Road between North Brook Lane and Wisconsin Avenue will be resurfaced — an effort that initially will close one lane on Old Georgetown Road Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The final phase of work will require double lane closures Sundays through Thursdays between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The project is slated for completion in the fall.

The construction is part of a larger initiative to improve access near the Bethesda Metro station, as the nearby section of Old Georgetown Road carries more than 31,000 vehicles per day.
