Retiring Rep. Scott Rigell of Virginia says he is voting for Libertarian Gary Johnson for president.

Rigell told the New York Times in an interview Saturday that he plans on voting Libertarian over his own party's Republican nominee, Donald Trump.

Rigell, who has been in office since 2011, has been wary of Donald Trump and has said for several months that he could not support Trump for the presidency, even as the party's nominee. He is the first member of Congress to endorse the Libertarian.

As he made the announcement, he gave some guidance to other Republicans looking to not endorse or un-endorse Trump.

"When their own conscience is seared by some statement that Trump has made, I have encouraged them to be direct and also, in a timely manner, repudiate what he said," Rigell said. "People will respect it if you have a reason and you put it out there."
