A vehicle reportedly smashed through a brick wall and damaged military headstones at a cemetery in North Carolina.

The crash, which occurred early Wednesday morning in a part of the cemetery where Civil War unknowns are buried, left numerous headstones on the ground or out of place, Star News Online reported.

The driver fled the scene, but was later arrested and charged with hit and run and impaired driving, according to the report.

The company in charge of maintaining the cemetery said the area will be cleaned up and headstones will be put back in place on Wednesday.

More than 6,000 veterans and their spouses are buried in the cemetery.
