Two professors, including one American, were reportedly abducted in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Sunday.
The American, as well as an Australian professor, were abducted at gunpoint near the American University of Afghanistan in the capital, ABC News reported.
The story is developing and more information was not immediately available.
The news immediately spurred speculation on Twitter that the U.S. payment of $400 million earlier this year to Iran was a ransom that was partly to blame for the taking of more American hostages.
There has not yet been any call for a ransom, according to early reports.
