1. Receiver Brandon Banks wasn’t all that impressed with his 91-yard punt return for a touchdown. He knows he must do more to make the roster this season.

“I’m worried about making a play on offense,” he said. “Of course I want to make a play anytime I touch the ball, but right now I’m focusing on offense.”

Coach Mike Shanahan has said that Banks must prove he can help at receiver to make the 53-man roster. It’s not as if the coaches didn’t know that Banks could return a punt for a touchdown; he’s done it for them before.

Banks says helping at receiver matters.

“With the new kicking rule, I can’t be one-dimensional,” he said. “I want to contribute to the offensive side of the ball.”

Banks did not play receiver in the second preseason game after catching only two of nine passes thrown his way in the opener.

“I hope I get targeted another nine times so I can make the best of it this time,” he said.

2. Fullback Darrel Young said he was feeling better and plans on playing Saturday vs. Indianapolis. Young has not played this preseason because of his injured left hamstring on July 30.

Young tested it in practice Monday.

“I felt great, that’s the first time I ran and didn’t feel anything,” he said. “I had this setback before so I know where I am and how to take things and how to progress. I felt good about what I did [Monday]. I’ll go a little more today and a lot more tomorrow.”

Young hasn’t enjoyed watching.

“It’s brutal man, it’s brutal,” he said. “I’m finally in a position where I want to be in terms of being in the NFL and playing. I want to play. That’s what I’m here to do. You can’t make the team in the cold tub, I know that.”

3. Receiver Anthony Armstrong, who has played one snap this preseason because of a sprained shoulder suffered three weeks ago, finally went back to wearing a white jersey in practice. He had been wearing a yellow one (as the quarterbacks do) so that defensive players knew not to hit him.

Armstrong played one snap vs. the Bears, saying he snuck onto the field because he saw Aldrick Robinson was tried.

“I’m extremely eager,” Armstrong said. “Sitting back and watching, that sucks. You see [others] making plays and you want to have fun too.”

4. Kirk Cousins on a perfect throw that he probably shouldn’t have made.

5. The Redskins will hold a retirement press conference for Clinton Portis, their second all-time leading running back, on Thursday. Portis last played for Washington in 2010 and did not play for another team last season.
