1. Running back Tim Hightower said he hasn’t suffered any setback in his left knee, causing him to miss practice. Hightower sat out practice Saturday afternoon. Coach Mike Shanahan said that Hightower is not close to being 100 percent.
“I’m just getting better each day,” Hightower said. “I didn’t digress at all. It’s not an area of concern. I went out there the first couple days to see how my body felt and right now keep getting better. There are no setbacks. I’ll still be out there game one.”
2. Hightower said he’s learning how to balance wanting to practice, but taking it easy on his knee.
“That’s something I’m learning daily. It’s tough to watch. It’s tough especially when you’ve had a whole offseason to think about this. Let that passion just deal with it and you get here and you’re still watching a little bit even more. It’s a tough process, one that I know will pay off in the end.”
3. General manager Bruce Allen told ESPN 980 this morning that it doesn’t look good for linebacker Jonathan Goff. The free-agent pickup injured his right knee in practice Saturday; he tore his right ACL in September. Goff underwent an MRI over the weekend and coach Mike Shanahan is expected to address the results after practice Monday. Goff did not attend the walk-through Monday morning.
4. QB Rex Grossman said he’s comfortable serving as a mentor to rookie Robert Griffin III.
“I know my role and I’m gonna play it,” he said. “Whatever my role is I’ll do it to the best in the NFL. If I have to come in and play I want to be the best quarterback that week. If I have to be there and mentor I’ll be the best mentor in the league.”
Grossman said Griffin will be further along in this offense in his first year than when he was in Houston, learning it for the first time. Grossman’s reps were limited and he didn’t join the Texans until mid-June.
“He knows the playbook on paper to a T,” Grossman said. “He’s very smart. He’s got it down. But there’s a big difference between knowing it on paper and performing it. He’s doing a great job of it. He’ll get plenty of reps in this camp and by week one he’ll be ready to go. If he’s uncomfortable he’ll say it and they won’t call those plays. I would fully expect a full game plan.”
