Rule 8: Keep the pressure on. Use different tactics and actions and use all events of the period for your purpose. “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this that will cause the opposition to react to your advantage.”

Alinsky’s eighth rule in Rules for Radicals, is made possible by a ruthless, steady stream of the other ten rules. Different tactics not only keep those employing them from getting bored (see rule 7), but they keep those on the receiving end busy deflecting attacks. By keeping those on the Right occupied, the leftists utilizing these tactics are able to achieve victory in other battles with minimal resistance.

For example, the so-called “Republican War on Women,” featuring Sandra Fluke was simply a distraction from issues of religious liberty regarding government mandated contraception. The Trayvon Martin debacle was also used to keep conservatives on the defensive, effectively distracting us from putting pressure on Obama and bringing attention to his failures.

The tactics used are as varied as the creativity of those who employ them. Some of the tactics utilized are tried and true, such as picketing, protesting, marching, and disturbing events. Last year brought the advent of the Left wing’s new tactic of occupying. As long as there is always something distracting conservatives from the real issues, the left will utilize any bizarre tactic that crosses their minds.

As Rahm Emmanuel said, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And, what I mean by that, is an opportunity to do things you could not do before.” If the Left remains this relentless, we must be be just as relentless in picking (and winning) our battles. When we are on the defensive, they have the upper hand. We on the Right cannot give in and react to their “advantage.” We must keep our heads, be peaceful, and win.
