A record-breaking 40 percent of Americans now admit they’ve tried marijuana, according to Wednesday’s Gallup poll. That’s the highest percentage ever recorded since Gallup first asked the question in 1969.

At the time, only 4 percent admitted they had tried it. The percentage has steadily ticked up ever since.

The real question here is whether the percent of adventurous Americans has actually increased that much since the 70s, or whether people are simply less nervous to admit their illicit deeds. After all, if Bill Clinton and Barack Obama admitted it…

Adults 30-64 are the most likely to admit to smoking, followed by those under 30. Adults 65 and older are the least likely to fess up.

31 percent of Republicans say they’ve smoked, compared to 48 percent of Democrats.

The percentage of Americans who say they smoke now, as opposed to merely having tried it, remains small, at 11 percent.
