House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is defending Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) against widespread criticism for his unsubstantiated accusation that GOP nominee Mitt Romney did not pay taxes for 10 years.

Pelosi told The Huffington Post Sunday, “Harry Reid made a statement that is true. Somebody told him. It is a fact.” Pelosi continued, “Whether he did [pay taxes] or not can easily be disposed of: Mitt Romney can release his tax returns and show whether he paid taxes.”

Pelosi was also asked to comment on Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus calling Harry Reid “a dirty liar.”  At first, she responded “Who?" as if she was not familiar with the Republican Party leader. Later, she dismissed Priebus’s comment, saying he wasn’t part of Reid’s conversation with the Bain source. Well, neither was Pelosi, so according to her own argument, she has nothing credible to say on the matter.

There is no way that Pelosi could know whether Reid’s claim is true or not. After all, she wasn’t in the room when Reid was allegedly told by a Bain Capital investor about Romney’s taxes.

She went on to say, “Harry Reid is a person who is, as we know, A, is a fighter, B, he wouldn’t say this unless it was true that somebody told him that.”

Pelosi also argued that, “The salience of what Harry Reid is saying is related” to the Mitt Romney’s tax plan. She explained, “Here’s a guy who wants you to pay more when I think, ‘I’ meaning Harry Reid, somebody told me he hasn’t even paid his taxes. But he wants you to pay more to underwrite tax cuts for the wealthy…It’s like a double doozy.”

Meanwhile, Priebus has “tripled down” on his claim that Reid is a “dirty liar.” He said on “Fox & Friends” Monday morning, “There’s no triple down in blackjack, but I’ll triple down on my comments from yesterday.

“It’s just the truth. What else do you call somebody who goes onto the Senate floor and claims that someone hasn’t paid taxes in ten years, a complete lie, and uses his official office to do it?”

Priebus originally called Reid “a dirty liar” on ABC’s This Week on Sunday morning.

Reid has received harsh criticism for his baseless accusation from countless journalists and from liberal comedian and faux news host Jon Stewart.

Pelosi is the first party leader to come to Reid's defense. Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Shultz opted to neither to defend nor repudiate Reid's claims during her appearance on This Week on Sunday.

“Everybody is responsible for saying the things that they have information on," she said. "Harry Reid says that he has a credible source."
