Today's biggest news in the 2016 presidential race isn't Scott Walker's announcement or whatever crazy thing Donald Trump likely said. It's their feline opponent, a cat by the name of Limberbutt McCubbins, who is actually legally registered to run for president.

"This happened probably back in early May. My friend Issac messaged on Facebook asking for my address. After a half an hour later, I got an email from the FEC that Limberbutt McCubbins had been officially registered in the presidential race," Emily McCubbins, Limberbutt's owner, told ABC News.

The event goes to show how little it takes to become a presidential candidate, Emily pointed out.

"Personally, I think if you're going to become a leader of the free world you should have to do a bit more of an extensive application process. You don't even have to put in a social security number, which is a bit worrisome, but you do have to file some papers for tax records and campaign donations. You have to raise $5,000 to get on the ballot," she said.

Limberbutt is a Democrat, running against Hillary Clinton for the nomination. The cat has accumulated a solid following on Facebook so far.

Too bad for Republicans that Emily isn't taking her cat's campaign more seriously.

"It's just a fun thing to pass the time," she told ABC. "It's the summer and there's no homework, so we enter our cats in the presidential race."
