Americans eat a lot. And while things like the hot dog pizza make for a great late night talk show joke, food waste can be a serious subject, comedian John Oliver pointed out Sunday night.
Among his shocking statistics, Oliver revealed that up to 40 percent of all food produced in the U.S. never gets eaten, while nearly 50 million households across the country experience food insecurity.
“Food waste is like the band Rascal Flatts. It can fill a surprising number of stadiums even though most people consider it complete garbage," Oliver joked.
And not only is it extremely wasteful, it can be dangerous.
“At a time when the landscape of California is shriveling up like a pumpkin in front of a house with a lazy dad, it seems especially unwise that farmers are pumping water into food that ends up being used as a garnish for landfills," he said.
But if this problem is so big, why isn't Congress doing something about it? Well, a Republican tried, but find out what Oliver discovered happened to that bill.
