Hillary Clinton continues to crusade against for-profit schools, despite the fact that Bill made millions from one.
As part of her plan to make college more affordable, Clinton has pledged to “crack down on the abusive practices of for-profit colleges that defraud taxpayers while burdening students with debt for educational programs of no value.”
However, as recently as 2014, Bill Clinton collected millions from Laureate Education, a large company that runs for-profit colleges.
The Washington Times reported:
“Former President Bill Clinton collected more than $16 million from 2010 to 2014 as honorary chancellor of Laureate Education, a for-profit company that runs 80 education institutions around the globe, according to recently released tax returns. Four of its six U.S. colleges were flagged on the Education Department’s list of schools whose access to federal financial aid was being monitored out of concern over financial irresponsibility.”
Bill Clinton quit this role as chancellor just 12 days before his wife announced she was running for president.
The Laureate Education website has videos of Bill Clinton’s speeches from visits to campuses all around the world.
Laureate’s has more than 70 campus and online universities in 25 countries and offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs to over one million students worldwide. "Ours is the largest global network of degree-granting higher education institutions," the website says, "and our students are part of a diverse, international community that spans the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.”
In addition to giving Bill the chancellor position, Laureate Education also appears to be a major donor to the Clinton Foundation. According to the Daily Caller, “Laureate donated between $1 million to $5 million to the Clinton Foundation and actively collaborated with a Clinton project called the 'Clinton Global Initiative University.'"
So, if Clinton vows to crack down on for-profit universities that she claims take advantage of students, will she and Bill return Bill’s salary, condemn the worldwide expansion of such institutions, or refuse future donations from these institutions to the Clinton Foundation?
