Prince George's County had its 12th homicide in the first 11 days of the year, late Tuesday.

Cpl. Larry Johnson said it appears that a man tried to break into a home in the 7400 block of Riverdale Road when the homeowner shot the man.

"It appears the homeowner was defending himself," Johnson said.

Around 8:45 p.m., police responded to a call from the home about the shooting. The man who was shot died at the scene.

Earlier in the day, a University of Maryland student was shot and killed, and police were looking for a thin black 6-foot male seen with a scarf covering his face.
