Nearly one-fifth of registered Republicans want Donald Trump to end his 2016 presidential campaign.

According to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday, 19 percent think the GOP nominee should drop out, and another 10 percent "don't know."

However, 70 percent of Republicans do think Trump should stay in the race.

Overall, 44 percent of registered voters say they want Trump to end his campaign.

Pollsters surveyed 396 registered Republicans and 1,162 registered voters between Aug. 5-8. The confidence interval among Republicans is 6 percentage points and 3 percentage points for all voters.

The poll was done ahead of Trump's Tuesday controversy in which he appeared to suggest gun rights activists could stop rival Hillary Clinton from nominating liberal Supreme Court justices. He and his campaign have since said those comments were misinterpreted.
