Daily online searches for “vasectomy near me” have surged in the last week after a leaked report indicated the Supreme Court is poised to overturn national abortion rights, prompting an increase in men considering birth control options.

Internet searches for vasectomies saw a 99% increase since the draft decision was published last week, according to data collected by Google Trends and Innerbody Research, a home health product research company. The searches were most popular in Kentucky, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, and Florida.

Some men were also curious as to how permanent and costly the decision may be, with internet searches for “is a vasectomy reversible” and “how much is a vasectomy” increasing by 250%, according to the study. Although vasectomies can be reversed — some doctors have reported an increase in male patients requesting the procedure with the option to reverse later — it’s not typically recommended.

"We try to discourage that," Dr. Jed Kaminetsky, a board-certified urologist, told TODAY. "But people are coming who want to bank sperm and have a vasectomy, just to keep their options open."

Men had previously started seeking out vasectomies as an “act of love” in response to Texas’s controversial abortion law, enacted in September, that bans the procedure after a fetal heartbeat is detected, with the state reporting a 15% increase in scheduled vasectomies in the weeks after it took effect.
