A high court in Fiji ruled on Monday that the United States can seize a docked yacht that allegedly belongs to a sanctioned Russian oligarch.

The vessel, known as the Amadea, is allegedly owned by Suleyman Kerimov, owner of Russia's biggest gold producer, Polyus.

The Suva High Court in Fiji "granted the order to seize the superyacht Amadea after an application was made last month by the Director of Public Prosecutions to register the US warrant to seize the yacht," officials said in a press statement.

The Amadea arrived in Fiji on April 12 after departing Mexico in an attempt to evade the sanctions placed against Kerimov by the U.S. and its allies in the United Kingdom and the European Union. A week after its arrival, the Fiji High Court barred the vessel from leaving its waters "until the finalization of an application to register a warrant to seize the property."

Defense lawyers have pushed back against the U.S.'s claims, arguing that the vessel is not owned by Kerimov but by Eduard Khudainatov, according to the Associated Press.

If seized, the vessel will be the second acquired by the U.S. under its sanctions against Russia over the invasion of Ukraine.
