A former New Hampshire middle school teacher has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges after he threatened a Republican state lawmaker for supporting legislation that would ban critical race theory.

Daniel Rattigan, 31, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of harassment and obstructing government administration. Rattigan worked as a teacher at a middle school in Allenstown, New Hampshire, near the capital of Concord.

Rattigan had sent threatening messages to state Rep. Keith Ammon because of his support for legislation banning critical race theory. In one of the messages, Rattigan told Ammon that he hoped the lawmaker would “get skull f***ed to death,” the New Hampshire Journal reported.

The New Hampshire Journal reported that Rattigan had worked at the middle school in 2013 for about 18 months, citing Superintendent Peter Warburton, who said Rattigan had since not been employed by the district.

Ammon had been one of the primary sponsors of the legislation to ban critical race theory in New Hampshire public schools, but the bill was later abandoned in favor of an attachment to the state budget that functionally accomplished the same thing, according to the report.

Rattigan faces no jail time but has $1,240 in suspended fines contingent upon good behavior.

Critical race theory, which argues that American institutions are systemically racist and oppressive to racial minorities, has been the subject of substantial national controversy over its often disputed presence in public schools.

Democratic lawmakers and liberal activists have said the theory is not taught in public schools despite evidence to the contrary.
