“There was an attempt to assassinate Putin,” he told Ukrainian Pravda, a local news outlet. “He was even attacked, it is said, by representatives of the Caucasus, not so long ago. This is non-public information. [It was an] absolutely unsuccessful attempt, but it really happened. … It was about two months ago.”
The Russian president has reportedly avoided five assassination attempts throughout his time in office. These attempts date back to 2000.
The previously unconfirmed assassination attempts underscore the high tensions as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine, resulting in thousands of deaths on both sides.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also dodged several assassination attempts since the war began, with at least three coming in the first week of the invasion. However, those attempts were thwarted by actions within Russia’s own Federal Security Service, according to the Times.
More than 3,900 Ukrainians have been killed since the invasion began, with another 4,532 injured as of Monday, according to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Most of these casualties were caused by explosives or wide-impact shelling.
