On July 26, D.C. Fire and EMS officials were called to the 3800 block of Minnesota Avenue Northeast for the report of an intoxicated male. They found 61-year-old Darryl Eugene Sweet Sr. unconscious and unresponsive and took him to a hospital. Sweet was pronounced dead the next day.

An autopsy found that Sweet died of blunt force trauma to the head, police said, and his death was ruled a homicide.
