One woman died and another remains in critical condition after the vehicle they were in veered off the road and hit a light pole and a brick wall in Northeast D.C. Saturday morning.

Police are investigating what caused a silver 2003 Hyundai to leave the road around 1:35 a.m. Saturday. The vehicle was traveling south on Division Avenue N.E., and at the intersection with Ames Street N.E., the car hit a wooden light pole on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The collision with the pole caused the vehicle to rotate and hit a brick retaining wall. A woman in the front seat sustained blunt impact trauma to the body and she was later pronounced dead. D.C. Fire and Emergency personnel transported the driver, also a woman, to a local hospital.
